A poem
Jennifer Shaina Gomes
She cannot walk in the streets alone at night
Predators are watching, she's locked within their sight
She cannot wear the dress she wants
Society will scream at her, rumours will haunt
The demons that lurk outside the gates of her home
Follow her when she steps outside to roam
She has no freedom, she has no security
We say women are empowered, but do you think they are actually free?
She is a mother, a sister, a friend
But we fail to protect them until the very end
She is stripped off her dignity
The demons devour her and everyone just stands aside to see
Her voice is silenced
Her bed is stained in blood red
She screams, she fights
But cannot walk through the darkness to come out in the light
The scar she bears is deep
But punishment is something those demons don't reap
Let her fly, don't clip her wings
Let her voice sound loud when she sings
Let her walk with her head held high
Wipe her tears, don't let her gasp that losing sigh
She is a mother, a sister, a friend
she is a messenger that God has send
She is a woman who shall see no tragic end
