Pexels

The Last Bench

A short story

Anoushka Prasad

Each afternoon, Arjun occupied the last bench of the college courtyard, headphones on, feigning to listen to music. It was the only spot where he could be by himself, where no one inquired.

Then, one afternoon, someone else was there.

A girl, sitting on his bench, reading through a book. She didn’t glance up when he sat down, nor did she shift position. It was as though she had always been there.

The following day, she was back. And the day after that.

One afternoon, he finally spoke up. “What are you reading?”

She looked at him. “It’s a diary.”

He furrowed his brow. “Yours?”

She smiled weakly. “No. Someone left it behind.”

Arjun hesitated. “What’s in it?”

She flipped a page. “Just fragments of someone’s life. Little things. Like the way they sat on this bench every day, waiting for something. Or someone.”

An odd sensation swept over him. “Do you know who it is?”

She shook her head. “No name. Just memories.”

They read the diary together for a week. The author wrote about being invisible, about wishing someone would see them. There were mentions of the bench, the trees, the students passing by without even a glance. It was intimate, as if someone was talking to them.

Then, one day, the girl was not there.

Arjun searched for her, but she never returned.

The diary remained on the bench.

He turned to the last page. His hand trembled as he read the final line:

“Maybe tomorrow, someone will finally talk to me.”

The entry was dated one year ago.

His chest constricted. He turned to the first page, searching for anything. At the bottom of the first entry was a name.

A name he had ne’er seen before.

It was hers.

And suddenly, he knew—she had been waiting all along...

World Press Freedom Day

This year the theme of the World Press Freedom Day 2025 global commemoration is on the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on journalism and media: Reporting in the Brave New World – The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media.

AI is deeply altering journalism, requiring tools that augment investigative reporting, content creation, and fact-checking.

The event will explore these intricate issues, creating a scholarly discourse with journalists, policymakers, media professionals, and civil society actors to ensure AI reinforces, rather than weakens, press freedom and democratic principles.

I met my younger self for coffee today we arrived together both ten minutes late. with her huge backpack, she came rushing “The traffic was terrible” I say as I stride in she had a boy cut hair with two red strands wearing an outfit our mum chose I was dipped in pink, ear pods in and a little purse in my hand still wearing our mum’s choice but now with bows! she was mesmerised by my skin while continuously looking at herself in the mirror beside I complemented her strawberry freckles and told her, “It’s okay to hide” she asks me whether I still struggle with friendships i pat her head and said we found home in them now she cried about how she will never find the love that she offers I tell her how a boy loves her like it’s the easiest thing in the world now she makes me order her a cold coffee with whipped cream while I sip on my warm tea and look at her smile beam she swirls her fingers over her scars worried about never being good enough glancing at my wrists, I smile and tell her how she’s always been tough as she leaves, she asks me a question “Do we still dream? will we ever accomplish them?” I say I believe we will and we’re almost there now as we both walk away I realise that I became the person she’s strives to be and I will always let her live in me. I hope we meet for coffee again...

The Man in the Shadows

Niyonika Thapa

He doesn’t speak loud, but I always hear,

A calm kind of strength that lingers near.

He walks like the world doesn’t owe him a thing,

Yet it gives me the moon, the stars, and spring.

He ties his shoes in a curious way,

And hums old songs at the break of day.

He laughs at jokes that no one gets,

And fix all my broken bets.

He waits behind the scenes with grace,

A gentle smile on a weathered face.

He claps the loudest in the crowd,

Even when he’s not allowed.

You might not see him take the lead,

But he’s there in every brave good deed.

And if you ask me who he is—

This quiet man who loves like this

You’ll know him by the way I glow,

He’s, my father.

Now you know.

The Killer in Town...

My mother told me about
the killer in town.
I asked her what he looks like
and she said -“its a man”.
I asked her who he targets
and she said -“girls like you”.
“girls like me?”
“Yes. Girls who are smart, beautiful, loving, caring,
meek, outspoken, dependant, independent”.
“…but thats every other girl I know mother!”
“Yes”.

I asked her how do I know its him?
She said “You don’t and that’s why you stay in”.
I asked her- “How long?”
She said- “as long as he stays in town.”

“But what if he stays forever?”

JOURNEY TO THE UNKNOWN

A short story

I sat quietly at the station, observing the bustling platform around me. There was an undeniable charm to that day; the people, the market stalls, children playing joyfully on their own, individuals engrossed in newspapers, others engaged in phone conversations or stretching their necks in anticipation of the train's arrival. While these scenes were common, they felt significant, as if I were a spectator to the beauty of everyday life. Yet, it was not merely mundane; everything seemed to revolve around my husband, my daughter, and me, the true protagonists of this moment.

Suddenly, I was playfully interrupted by my husband and daughter, who were teasing me and laughing at my exaggerated frown. It was a magical sight to witness their happiness, their carefree enjoyment of the moment. I reached out to my husband, grasping his hand firmly, interlocking our fingers, while I watched our four-year-old ray of sunshine, as she played with her small toy.

"Are you feeling cold, love?" my husband inquired, his voice tender and soothing. It was the first of January, New Year's Day, and indeed, the chill was palpable. "I've never felt so warm in my life, love. Thank you for this warmth, for our family, for everything," I replied, resting my head gently on his shoulder.

"You both are my world, my everything. There’s no need to thank me, love. It’s you who fills our little family with so much love; it all feels like a dream— you, our precious daughter, everything," he responded, wrapping his large, warm hands around my shoulders. Our daughter had drifted off to sleep on his lap, her head nestled against my husband's chest. He held us close, cuddling us tightly, as if to shield us from the world. "This is a bond that transcends many lifetimes," he murmured into my ears, planting a soft kiss on my forehead, then gently kissing our sleeping daughter's little cheeks.

The once comforting hum of the crowd suddenly erupted into a cacophony of screams, shattering the peace. People began to scatter in every direction, driven by an instinct to flee from an unseen threat. Our daughter, roused from her slumber by the chaos, clung to her father's chest, trembling.

In a swift motion, my husband enveloped her in one arm, shielding her as he took my hand with the other. Just as we rose from the bench, ready to find safety, a man stepped into our path, brandishing a long gun aimed straight at my husband. Time seemed to freeze. The noise faded into silence. I shut my eyes, the world around me dimming. I could no longer feel the gentle touch of my husband’s hand or hear our daughter’s sweet voice calling out, “Mumma! Mumma!”

When I opened my eyes, the station was deserted, void of any life. Panic surged through me as I called out for my family, my heart racing. Then, I felt a small hand grasp my finger tightly—it was my little angel. Moments later, my husband appeared, taking my other hand, a warm and reassuring smile lighting up his face. “Mumma, it’s time to go! The train is here!” my daughter exclaimed, her excitement infectious.

“Do you remember what I told you, love? This bond lasts through many lifetimes. We’re just moving on to the next one,” my husband said gently.

“But I wanted more time in this life, more moments in our cozy home, more days watching our angel grow,” I replied, my voice thick with emotion. He pulled us close, wrapping his arms around us tightly. “We’ll miss our train, my love. Trust me, our next destination holds all the answers you seek. Let’s go.”

With that, we made our way to the train, which stood patiently waiting for us alone. My daughter bubbled with laughter and joy as she hopped aboard with her father, ready for the adventure that lay ahead.

I paused at the gate, taking a final glance behind me. There we were—me, my husband and daughter, nestled together on the platform floor, sleeping soundly, faces serene and content. We looked so close, just like we do at home in our cozy bed. A soft sigh escaped my lips as I climbed aboard the train, settling down next to my family. As the train began to glide away, I felt a mix of emotions, heading towards an unknown destination.

Remembering all such happy and innocent families that were shattered in the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai.

काश !

A Hindi poem

Bhumika  Shaw

B.A Sem 2

by Pexels
